Meet Cocoa Sarai, our WNDR WMN OF THE WEEK!
Brooklyn, New York’s own Cocoa Sarai has wielded a microphone singing in Pilgrim Church since the age of two. Raised by a musical family, to Jamaican-American parents, it is no surprise that Cocoa would go on to impact culture, thus changing the world. A singer, accomplished songwriter, dynamic performer, engineer, educator and in a lane all her own, Cocoa Sarai demonstrates mastery of organic songwriting and self-producing skills, which has led her to write and work with top artists/talent in the industry such as Dr. Dre, Anderson Paak, Busta Rhymes, Lee Daniels, Sevyn Streeter, K. Michelle, Grammy Award winning producers, Dem Jointz, Kwame, The Buchanan’s, Focus and many more! Cocoa has also collaborated with the biggest record labels in the industry such as Aftermath Entertainment, Epic, Sony, Atlantic, the list goes on.
With such an inspiring hustle and talent to match, Cocoa Sarai’s hometown came through to let her know that her work was not going overlooked. Cocoa is a recipient of the Underground Music Award for Best Female R&B artist, and headlined the BET Music Matters showcase 3 times due to her loyal NYC following. With her NYC buzz and fan base growing, Cocoa caught the eye of some of the biggest acts we can name and shared the stage with them as well. Some to mention are Rick Ross, Wale, Big Sean, and many more. She has also performed at legendary New York venues such as Madison Square Garden, SOB’s & The Apollo to name few. Cocoa Sarai’s talent is one way too tremendous to keep confined so of course she went to take on the world! She has traveled to Guam, Japan, Italy, Spain, Canada and Hungary.
With 3 independent albums under her belt, ½ Past 7, The Black & White, and most recently Nostalgia | The Vibey EP, which she engineered, mixed and mastered herself, it is of no surprise that Cocoa Sarai would receive the biggest break in her career thus far. Cocoa was called to perform on FOX TV’s “The Four” where Sean “Diddy” Combs, Dj Khaled, Charlie Walk, Meghan Trainor and Fergie watched and adjudicated talent to determine who was America’s next biggest star. While Cocoa poured her heart out in front of millions of viewers, little did she know that performing in front of Diddy was just the beginning and the catalyst to the biggest moment of her life. In the same year as performing on national television, Cocoa met the legendary Dr. Dre of Aftermath Entertainment. The Brooklyn born and bred was faced with the decision to leave the nest and take that leap of faith into a well deserved blessing; she moved to California to work with Aftermath. While working with Aftermath, Cocoa went on to meet and work with one of the most multi-talented and unique artists of our time, Anderson .Paak, singing and/or writing on 8 of the 14 songs on his current album OXNARD. Cocoa was also featured rapping on “Mansa Musa”, one of the records on OXNARD with Dr. Dre. Sounds like a fairytale doesn’t it? Well, when you’ve put in your 10,000 hours for YEARS and your talent is just as potent, the universe works in your favor. What is Cocoa Sarai up to now? Well, she is currently splitting her time between touring the world performing with Anderson .Paak, songwriting and finishing her upcoming album.
The self-motivated & multi-talented Cocoa Sarai has been recognized as our WNDR WMN OF THE WEEK because she exemplifies what it means to WORK and not wait. This WMN completely understands that she is the master of her fate and whatever she wants, she’ll need to go out and conquer. Even if this meant teaching herself other crafts such as producing, engineering etc, she did just that. We have a big star on our hands with this one. A WNDR WMN she is indeed!
